Intermittent Fasting: A Beginner's Guide to Building a Sustainable Routine.

Intermittent fasting has become one of the most discussed approaches to structured eating.

But beyond social media trends, what does intermittent fasting actually mean?

What is intermittent fasting?

Intermittent fasting is an eating pattern that alternates between periods of eating and periods of fasting.

One popular approach is the 16:8 method, where a person eats within an eight-hour window and fasts for approximately 16 hours.

Other approaches exist, and there is no single fasting schedule that works for everyone.

Why do people try intermittent fasting?

People may use time-restricted eating as a way to structure their meals and reduce unplanned snacking.

Research has also investigated intermittent fasting and time-restricted eating in relation to weight management and metabolic health.

However, results vary between individuals, and intermittent fasting is not necessarily appropriate for everyone.

Wellness isn't about restriction

A sustainable wellness routine should not leave you constantly exhausted, hungry or obsessed with food.

Your overall diet still matters.

During your eating window, focus on nutritious foods such as:

  • Vegetables

  • Fruits

  • Whole grains

  • Legumes

  • Quality protein

  • Healthy fats

  • Plenty of water

Where does tea fit in?

Unsweetened, caffeine-free herbal teas can be an enjoyable part of a wellness routine.

WhiteLeaf herbal teas such as hibiscus, spearmint, and turmeric ginger tea can provide variety throughout the day.

If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, have a medical condition, take medication, have a history of an eating disorder, or are unsure whether fasting is appropriate for you, speak with a healthcare professional first.

The goal isn't to fast perfectly. The goal is to build healthy habits that are sustainable for you.
